A Brighter Future for Everyone

Maths

Curriculum Intent

At Claremont Primary School the intent is for our maths teaching to enable each child to develop their learning and achieve their full potential. We believe that all children have the right to ‘think deeply about maths’. The focus upon understanding number fluency and number sense enables our children to apply their knowledge to reasoning and problem solving activities. We aim to increase pupil confidence by instilling the message that ‘Everyone can do Maths’. Our lessons encourage enthusiasm and a genuine fascination towards the subject. We have a consistent focus to allow children to express themselves using the language of mathematics with assurance.

We ensure that our children develop:

  • a secure mathematical fluency, so that pupils develop conceptual understanding and the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately.
  • their ability to reason and explain by following a line of enquiry, developing an argument, justification or proof using mathematical language.
  • their ability to solve problems by applying their mathematics to a variety of problems with increasing skill and confidence.

We use the White Rose Scheme of Learning Timetables and teach following the principles of a Mastery Approach to learning. White Rose, NCETM and additional resources are used by staff to structure the learning for each lesson.

We use the Concrete, Pictorial and Abstract Approach. There is a focus upon using manipulatives throughout each key stage to deepen understanding of the abstract. This method enables the children to internalise the concepts to a greater degree.
