At Claremont, we are really keen to encourage our children to become awesome readers and recognise that there are many different genres of reading to explore. To help with this, throughout the year, we have a number of groups reading a variety of books at differing levels. Some of our year 3 and 4 children have explored the wonderful worlds within The Enchanted Wood (Enid Blyton), Meerkat family life inThe Bolds (Julian Clary) and boring parents in The Parent Agency (David Baddiel).
Year 1 children have loved the wide range of books from the wonderful partnership of Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler. These have included The Gruffalo, Room on the Broom, Monkey Puzzle, The Smartest Giant in Town and of course, A Squash and a Squeeze. We focussed on examining rhyming words, story sequences, character differences and always included book reviews at the end of each week. To encourage the love of reading further, at this early age, we also used masks, puppets and drama to re-enact the stories.
