A Brighter Future for Everyone

Activity 1: Create your own Moon Myth

Yesterday, you read a mythical story all about the moon, today you are going to create your own myth about the moon. There are already lots of modern myths about the moon, you may recognise some and want to use these as the basis for your mythical story. You could begin by drafting ideas for a Moon-based urban myth that explains a real or imaginary phenomenon. Here are some ideas:

enlightenedhow the 'man in the Moon’ got there

enlightenedwhy the Moon is made out of cheese

enlightenedwhy a full moon makes you crazy

enlightenedwhy we refer to something happening 'once in a blue moon.'

Remember that a myth is like a story so you could create a plan that that includes a description of the setting, a fantastical character or animal, a detailed description of the struggle or problem and a creative ending.

A myth usually begins with a sentence opener such as:

‘Many, many years ago…’

‘Once there was…’

‘A long time ago...’

However, you could consider more dramatic openers such as:

‘In a darkened world…’

‘In the velvet night sky…’

Below is a checklist of key features of a myth, this will help you to check you have included everything!

Activity 2: Subtracting Decimals

Click here for a video to refresh your memory of subtracting decimals with the same number of decimal places. Once you've watched the video, click here for an activity which can be completed on blank paper or in an exercise book.

Activity 3: Tim Peake

Tim Peake is our hero for this topic, the same way Queen Victoria and William Booth were our heros for the Victorians topic. So it is a good idea to learn a bit about Tim Peake, who he is, what he does and why he is our hero for the 'Stargazers' topic. Click on the links below to find out more about him. Then, read below for your activity.

Click here and here for information all about Tim Peake.

Click here for information about Tim returning to earth.

Click here for a video of Tim Peake telling us what it takes to become an astronaut.

Below is a video of Tim Peake on the International Space Station, it should give you a little insight into what it would be like to live in space. While watching the video, think about what it would be like to live in Space and be that far away from Earth. Then, your activity is below.

Now that you have watched the above videos and red the information, you are going to create a job advertisement for an astronaut. Imagine NASA are looking for more people to go into space, what kind of people will they need? What skills will those people need to have? Look at the template below for how to structure your job advertisement, however you can create yours on some blank paper.
